- Well we wanted to take a moment and stroll down memory lane and talk about what libraries used to be like and what they are like now.
- We’ll also remind you about school libraries because yes, they are still around and are even more important than ever.
History facts
- In 3500 BC clay tablets were used for written language but it wasn’t until around 3200 BC that the first known libraries were created in ancient Egypt
- Librarians were called scribes
- By 3000 BC papyrus was used instead of tablets
- By 500 BC the first libraries appeared in Athens and Samos and by 300BC philosophical schools were developing libraries around them
- Parchment didn’t start replacing papyrus until the 3rd century BC and used skins of animals but it was still very expensive
- Paper was first traced back to around early 100’s AD in china
- Between the years 500-1000 AD monasteries began collecting books
